The Swiss Family Carlson Celebrates 1 Year

1 year ago today we stumbled off a plane and made Switzerland our home.  It’s hard to believe, but 1 year ago today we stumbled off an airplane and made Switzerland our home.

In that time we have:

  • Visited 19 of the 26 cantons
  • Traveled to 37 Swiss cities
  • Traveled to France, Germany, Lichtenstein, Scotland, England and Ireland
  • Learned some passable German
  • Celebrated holidays we’d never heard of before (Fastnacht, St. Nicholas day, 1st August)
  • Completed a whole school year
  • Climbed 5 mountains

Mark has loved swimming in the Rhine, curling in Dissentis, visiting the two loveliest libraries in the the world, and eating copious amounts of bread and cheese.

Look at that curling form! Like a champ!

And me?  I have love it all.

I have also learned a lot about myself. I have learned about the joy of simplicity.  About the joy of actually using your really beautiful glass bowl for the serving fruit.  I have learned the joy of hopping on a bike and going to the store.  I have experienced the happiness of sending my child to the park with his friends.

I have been happy here. People ask if we are ever going to come back.  It is tempting to stay.  Switzerland has a lot going for it. Great education. A large middle class that provides social stability. Excellent public transportation. Great food. And an attitude that it is your God-given right to walk and hike wherever you please and that you should be outside as much as possible.

Oh yeah! I have!

I hope you have enjoyed our first year here.  I hope you relish the second with me.

See? Worth it. Would I lie?
